The name "Masantol" is believed to have originated from the abundance of santol trees in the area. A local legend tells of a Spanish missionary who, upon asking a vendor for the name of the place, was told "Padre, todos dulce Masantol," referring to the sweet santol fruits she was selling. Misunderstanding this as the name of the town, the missionary recorded it as "Masantol."
